METHAMPHIBIAN AND SBTG PRESENT “DAMAGE INC. + VARSITY BONES”
Throughout history, man has engaged in an eternal battle with one another. From schoolyard fights to full-blown wars, conflict has played a role in the progression of the world. This Fall, Methamphibian and SBTG present their own unique interpretations on this age-old subject with the release of two new sneaker projects, DAMAGE INCORPORATED and VARSITY BONES. The world’s two best sneaker customizers come together once again to lend their unparalleled artistic talents for the opening of the new SOURCE store in Beijing. 

DAMAGE INCORPORATED.
DAMAGE INC. is Methamphibian’s fictitious take on a futuristic, politically-relevant “war-for-profit” concept that thrives in a world where war has become big business. A world where war is no longer about territory, ideals or tyranny but has now generated a legitimate economic market where stocks are traded in bullets. Where national militaries are no longer needed but in their place, independent Para-military corporations are called upon to provide their services on per-hire contracts.

DAMAGE INC. will unveil two new limited versions of the iconic Nike Dunk, featuring new hand-painted digital camo patterns and custom embroidered accents. Each model represents a competing Para-military team, both hell-bent on dominating their respective global markets and increasing their own market shares, with their mission objectives coming in second. ‘OBSIDIAN VIPER’ is based on an arctic environment camouflage colorway, inspired by a team that is all about overwhelming strength and firepower, always equipped with the latest in heavy weaponry. ‘Basilisk’ is based on a Black Ops night camouflage colorway, representing a special unit that employs stealth and strategy and uses deadly force from within the shadows. 

The collection is a crossover from Methamphibian’s custom 12″ action figure line and will lead to the introduction of new figure characters in the near future.

VARSITY BONES.
VARSITY BONES is the latest chapter in SBTG’s ongoing celebration of the timeless Nike Dunk. Introduced in 1985 through some of the most storied teams in college basketball, the Dunk takes on a new twist with two limited versions that celebrate the underdogs, the misfits, the teams that were never formed and never got to play in the big leagues. The shoes are based on two fictitious rival gangs who love to play basketball but never get picked to play for their schools because of their colorful reputations as delinquents.

VARSITY BONES takes a step back in its aesthetic approach, using clean and simple color blocks to give the shoes a nostalgic 80’s feel. Each design come in 12 pairs only, representing one of the rival gangs who have opposing ideologies. The red and black Dunk is based on the ‘fierce warrior’ persona of the ‘RED FURY’ gang, a group of misfits who insist on settling everything by sheer power and brute force. The black and purple Dunk is inspired by the ‘SLY BONES’ gang, cunning tacticians who believe that manipulation and deception make things more fun. Forever intertwined by their love for basketball, their blood feud rages on.
 

DAMAGE INCORPORATED and VARSITY BONES will be available exclusively at the new SOURCE store in Beijing this Fall.

If you haven’t been following on what’s going on at Royalefam, we have just recently released our first in line for the Varsity Bones series titled Prison Blues. We have confirmed the final release information for the previously revealed PRISON BLUES Dunks. The shoes will launch on the new ROYALEFAM website this Sunday, August 9 at 10PM E.S.T. This first installment of the ongoing VARSITY BONES series will come in two versions: a Dunk Hi and a Dunk Lo.

The previous photos released a few days ago were of the prototype sample and here are the confirmed pictures of the two shoes that will be made available this weekend. Each shoe will only have 12 pairs available for sale. For more information, visit www.royalefam.com.

PRISON BLUES RELEASING ON THE 9TH OF AUGUST, 2009 AT 10PM E.S.T.

Along with the release of his OG College Dunk custom series, SBTG did a special 1 of 1 Varsity Bones custom for Kobe Bryant during his recent Singapore Tour. The kicks are meant to represent a “What If?” scenario, if Kobe didn’t jump straight into the NBA from high school and went to Duke as he was supposed to. The custom pair is painted on a size US 14 Nike Dunk Hi (Kobe’s shoe size), which comes in a special wooden box with SBTG and Kobe’s logo laser engraved on it. Hit the jump for detailed pics.

SBTG PRESENTS FIRST IN VARSITY BONES SERIES : PRISON BLUES

In celebration of the Dunk in 2008, Nike sent world-renowned sneaker customizer Mark Ong (SBTG) an 8-compartment locker with the original 7 vintage college Dunks inside. Inspired to fill the void in the last compartment, the concept of Varsity Bones was born. Varsity Bones is a series of shoes based on the underdog, on fictitious teams made up of the overlooked, the dismissed and the forgotten. They represent the ghost colleges and phantom teams that never got to play in the big leagues.

The first in the line is ‘Prison Blues’. This new work elevates the craftsmanship of SBTG Custom Kicks to a whole new level in the playing field. With a finish that looks close to perfection, the detailing on this shoe is unsurpassed.

Concept of Varsity Bones

It was 2008: the year of the dunk. Nike sent us a custom-made locker with 7 vintage dunks in it. But there were 8 compartments. There was a space to be filled.

SBTG Custom Kicks came about from a love of these vintage Dunks, which has inspired many of our best works and this is our way of honoring the original legends. To fill in the void with a series of dunks based on the underdog. Teams made up of the overlooked, the dismissed and the forgotten

To those that play the game differently, dress different and refuse to conform to rules or tradition.
That spirit’s still alive and kicking.

SBTG presents a rebellious interpretation of the traditional college basketball style: The best team that never made it to the league.

We are the Varsity Bones.

1985, the year of the college dunk. Nike releases the original 7 college Dunk, some of the most storied programmes in college basketball now had the shoes that bled their colors. Michigan, UNLV, Villanova, Kentucky, St Johns, Arizona, Iowa. Born from the Nike Terminator, the original 7 dunks represented the first time Nike had introduced an integrated collection of basketball warm-ups, uniforms and shoes.

Introduced as a technical basketball at the time, what the dunk really represented was an explosion of colors. From a pure color and design aesthetic, the dunk was one of the biggest breakthroughs in the history of Nike dunks.

Then true to the Nike formula, the dunk went away. It has lived one season and done its job. It broke new ground, showing sneaker enthusiasts what it could be done with new colors.
But the original 7 weren’t dead and buried.

They simply lay dormant, waiting for their chance to return in vintage style. Because of their color schemes and rugged build, they developed a cult following in both the skate and sneaker communities; a cult that paved the way for a rebirth of the dunk 2 decades later.

It was 2008: the year of the dunk. Nike produced 5 custom-made lockers with the 7 original college dunks. We were really lucky that Nike presented Royalefam with one of them.

SBTG and hence, Royalefam, got started because of our founder’s love for kicks, of which the original vintage dunks featured prominently. Now having built both a career and a company based on that love and those sneakers, we have taken it upon ourselves to give vintage a new groove. Having never before had all 7 dunks in our possession, SBTG Custom Kicks now pays tribute to the original college dunks with our spin on things, putting a twist on the college colours.

Firstly we researched the 7 colleges and what had made each of them stand-out. From the players who became superstars, the coaches that were legends or the fight songs and mottos that said it all.

We used the most relevant from each and stencilled them on the dunks. These were combined with Royalefam’s trademark hand-painted camo designs done in both the school colours and complimentary shades. Giving a new aesthetic to an old classic. Always remaining true to the school.
